10 years ago, the young Pailin shared a video of a dish thatâŚback thenâŚfew people knew about. Khao soi, a curry noodle soup with egg noodles hailing from Northern Thailand that most Thai restaurants here didnât offer 10 years ago.
If you knew about it then, it was probably because you had traveled to Chiang Mai on vacation.
Today it has become almost mainstream, and it deserves a new and improved video and recipe! I am happy to report that, now that I have 10 more years of experience making cooking videos, this video is MUCH, much better!
Khao soi has become so popular that during my podcast interview with Chef Arnold Myint, he said someone asked him, âIs khao soi is the new pad thai?â Seeing as many people actually prefer khao soi to pad thaiâŚthatâs certainly possible in the future!
Though I think that people who donât like pad thai probably have only had the too-sweet, gloppy versions in N. American Thai restaurants. Cuz a properly made pad thai is pretty darn delicious.
New Podcast Ep: Thai Food Mythbusting
Speaking of podcast, my latest podcast episode is a super fun one where Chef Hong and I bust common myths and misconceptions about Thai cuisine. Listen and see if you know about any of these common myths!
I hope so. I've never been a big fan of pad Thai, but I've ridden my scooter a long way when I've found good khao soi. I lived in Lampang and could find it easily, then moved to Surat Thani, where a restaurant opened while I was there. I visited at least weekly. Often the only farang, usually a good sign.
Khao soi has been on my local Vancouver, WA restaurant menus for some time now, and is one of my favorite soup noodle dishes. Just recently, I discovered a local Beaverton, Oregon Thai restaurant serving a dry version, khao soi hang, which is now my new favorite noodle dish!
