First, Iāll be in SF for an event July, details below! Now, on to our business.
Whenever Iām in grocery stores and see food products labelled as āThai,ā it always annoyed me. Because I know that whatever is inside would have little resemblance to the Thai food it claims to be. And then one day I opened my freezer and found thisā¦
After I was done calling my husband a traitor, I started to wonderā¦maybe itās not all that bad?
Well, there is only one way to know. And I had to bring you along for the ride and make a video out of it! š
So I went grocery shopping at a few places (including our beloved Costco) and grabbed all instant products that are labelled āThai.ā I came home with A LOT. I was surprised how many āThaiā products there were on the shelves if you looked for them.
But I also noticed that over half of them were some form of pad thai: frozen pad thai, instant pad thai, pad thai kits, you name it. It seems like people REALLY want their pad thai anyway they can get them! So I decided to dedicate my latest video to tasting grocery store pad thai.
Video: I Tried and Rated Instant Pad Thai!
Here it is. According to commenters, apparently I was funny in this video, so if nothing else, I hope it provides some lighthearted entertainment š
Upcoming Event: Talk and Book Signing in SF (FREE)
Folks in the Bay Area, come hang out with me at the best cookbook store in town! Iāll be giving a talk and doing book signing at Omnivore Books on July 22! You can also pre-order a signed copy from the store as well.
I love to cook but donāt think I would ever buy any any pre-made Pad Thai products! Just saying!
Pailin,
You're so brave for trying these "faux" foods! Thing is, I only cook for one; freeze everything from hummus to tabbouleh to harissa; they come out fine, for one reason; garbage didn't go in, so garbage couldn't come out. Forget dehydrated, there is no reason, we cannot have high quality frozen food, whatever the cuisine.
I've bought a lot of frozen food over the last year; there's times when we just don't have the energy to cook and clean. Fact, in the course of complaining to producers about their foods about basic things like "is this a dessert? why are you using so much sugar?" Or, "you used chicken breast, and you didn't tenderize it? There's such a thing as chicken thighs." The result of these complaints has netted me about $200 in coupons for free food. That said, I don't see an improvement; I guess the market wants crap; excuse my English.
