One of my Patreon members shared with me this infamous post on Reddit:
(For those not familiar with AITA it stands for “am I the a**hole.”)
She had mixed jasmine and basmati rice together in the attempt to help organize her boyfriend’s kitchen, and then did not understand why he was livid with her. “They’re all just the same white rice,” she said.
Not surprisingly, the Reddit community was not kind to the poor woman.
I bring this up because, as someone who’s received many questions about types of rice, she’s not alone in the misunderstanding. And though most people DO know that the types of rice are different, many are not sure what the differences are.
Most importantly, do they need to be cooked differently? Can they be substituted for one another? When should you use which rice?
So I decided to make this video!
In this video I covered the 3 most common types of rice eaten in Asia: jasmine, Japanese short/medium grain rice (aka sushi rice), and basmati rice.
If you prefer to read, you can also read the article on my website, which has a little more detail on certain subjects, such as the validity of the “1-knuckle rule.”
Hope this helps clarify some things!
Pai, you are just the perfect Asian cuisine tutor !🤩 Your ability to communicate and your accuracy in describing every preparation is truly remarkable.
You educated me in regard to different ingredients and helped me to improve my cooking skills more than anyone else available on the World Wide Web.
A heartfelt THANK YOU from Florence, Tuscany, Italy
