Sawaddee ka! đđŒ
As a Thai person, Iâm not sure I will ever get used to the Canadian winter. đ„¶ And by the time we hit February, spring ought to be showing signs of being on the way⊠but it never is!
So, this month, weâre making soup. đČ Itâs our last chance to enjoy some hot, steaming bowlfuls before spring shows up next month. (I hope!)
These are some of my favourite Thai soups that are lesser known than the popular tom yum or tom kha gai. Something new for you to explore! But theyâre all flavorful, comforting and cozy. Stay warm!
Kao Tom - Thai Breakfast Rice Soup
Kao Tom is the Thai sister of congee but more soup-like than porridge-y. Itâs the perfect cold or rainy morning savory breakfast. Iâm using shrimp here, but use whatever proteins you have on hand and, you can easily meal prep all the components in advance.
Thai Oxtail Soup
While not common in Thailand, we do have two versions of Oxtail Soup. This version uses Thai herbs and pantry staples, and while itâs simple to make, this luxurious soup takes time - about 3 hours. I usually make it on the weekend, or hey, break out the Instant Pot.
Thai-Style Wonton Soup
Wonton Soup is a classic street food thatâs really easy to make at home. Homemade wontons with pork and shrimp are so comforting and you can whip the filling up in your food processor and then freeze extras for a quick meal later on. You can also make a vegetarian mushroom version.
Tom Yum Noodle Soup
Tom Yum Noodle Soup is not the popular tom yum soup with noodles added to it. Itâs an extremely popular Thai street food. Take a basic noodle soup, then amp it up with lime juice, roasted chili flakes, roasted peanuts and ground pork. It takes the noodle soup from âcomfortingâ to âexcitingâ!
Turmeric Chicken Soup
Turmeric Chicken Soup is a Southern Thai dish you wonât find on menus in North America. With its abundance of herbs, this soup feels so very therapeutic. Got a cold? This is the soup to make. And itâs so easy - all you have to do is toss everything in a pot and let it cook!
