“I want to learn to cook Thai food, but I’m so intimidated.” You have no idea how many times I have heard this. But when I dig into WHY people feel intimidated, it always comes down to ingredients.
People new to Thai cooking may look at a recipe, see a bunch of ingredients they have never used and don’t even know where to buy…so they are intimidated and give up.
So the key to making Thai cooking feel easy is in learning about our essential ingredients, and then stocking your pantry. This is why Thai cooking is easy for Thai people: we have most of the ingredients in our pantry, and we’re familiar with them. That’s it. The actual cooking is not the hard part.
So, in this video I have put together 10 essential ingredients that will allow you to make many of my recipes, plus 5 bonus ones to take it even further. With all 15, you can make MOST of the recipes on my website!
For an overview of Thai ingredients beyond these 15, here’s the blog post to read: Ultimate Guide to Essential Thai Ingredients
For deep dives on individual ingredients, they are all listed here.
As many veteran Thai cooks can attest, once your pantry is stocked with the basics, you realize that most of the recipes are just using the same ingredients over and over again in various different combinations.
Happy Thai Cooking!
