The latest recipe is a new and improved pineapple fried rice recipe, with a surprising twist đ. But I was surprised to be asked many times, âIsnât that just a dish made up for tourists?â or âIsnât that Americanized Thai food?â
NoâŠand alsoâŠIâm not sure why people think that. It seems if a thing is popular with tourists, it may start to lose its credibility as a âlegitâ Thai dish.
Now to be fair, serving it in a pineapple bowl is more of a touristy thing, and for a long time I also resisted making a pineapple bowl precisely because it made it look touristy.
But Iâve changed my mind. Because when I bring the fried rice out on a plate, I get the usual, âlooks goodâ reaction, but when I bring it out in a pineapple bowl, itâs like, âWOWWWW! Thatâs beautiful! Let me take a photo!!â And I want all the fanfare I can get, thank you very much.
And considering it doesnât take me any longer to make a pineapple bowl and itâs less messy than peeling and chopping, as I demonstrated in the videoâŠI just have no reason NOT to do it!
So I hope you will give this recipe a go, with or without the pineapple bowl. As one of my Patreon member reported,
My 86 year mother commented over and over again "I really like that rice...it is so good!"
And hereâs a pro tip I didnât mention elsewhere:
If you donât need to impress anyone with the pineapple bowl, buy pre-chopped fresh pineapple from the prepared fruits section at the supermarket so you donât need to deal with a whole pineapple! Avoid canned for this one, it really makes a difference!

I spent several years in Thaiiland in the 1960's and never encountered fried rice with pineapple. Since most of my time was spent on the east coast, from north to south, is this a dish found mostly in central and eastern portions of this beautiful country?
I'm wondering if the reason people assume pineapple fried rice is "tourist food" is the ubiquity of pineapple in the Americanized Chinese food of decades past? Particularly in "polynesian" restaurants and tiki bars, pineapple was *everywhere*.
