Fire Up the Grill With Thai BBQ!
BBQ season is here and these Thai grilling recipes are ones you'll want to try!
Sawaddee Ka!
It's time to bring out the BBQ as summer finally starts to kick into gear (I hope!). So I thought it would be a good time to share some Thai recipes you can try on your grill at home.
In Thailand, most grilling is done by street food vendors and restaurants. We don't really have a "backyard BBQ" culture and most people don't own a BBQ like they do here in North America.
But, thankfully, we can easily BBQ at home here so, let’s make the most of that and explore some amazing Thai grilling dishes.
No BBQ? No problem. If you don't have a grill, all of these dishes can be adapted for the oven or the broiler.
NEW: Beef Satay and *Real* Thai Peanut Sauce
Satays are such a popular street food in Thailand - you can find them everywhere! Though pork is most popular satay, originally satay came to Thailand as beef. And let me set the record straight with peanut sauce: it is not a sauce we put on everything (even though it would be good on everything), it’s usually reserved just for satays. And no, real peanut sauce has no peanut butter in it!
The Ultimate BBQ Chicken Recipe - Gai Yang
This is truly the ultimate, classic Thai BBQ Chicken recipe and if you haven’t had it before, this has to be on your list of dishes to make this summer - the flavours are completely unique to Thai Cuisine!
And whatever you do, do not skip the dipping sauce! It’s a must for the full experience.
Coconut Milk BBQ Chicken - Gai Golae
Being a specialty of southern Thailand, this Coconut Milk BBQ Chicken is the BBQ chicken that I grew up on. And it gets its iconic, salty-sweet, coconut-y, sticky red glaze from a truly unique grilling process (it’s marinated, double basted and triple grilled!). It’s utterly delicious!
Thai BBQ Pork Jowl
BBQ Pork Jowl is an incredibly flavourful and versatile dish popular in Northeastern Thailand. Pork jowl doesn’t get the same love in North America that it gets elsewhere but it’s very “grill friendly” and so satisfying when served with sticky rice and papaya salad. You can also use it in a Nam Tok Salad.
The BEST Steak Marinade
Ok, so this is a pretty big claim but I stand by it. This simple Thai steak marinade is the only one you’ll ever need - it’s that good. The most prominent flavours are oyster and soy sauces - with a little touch of sweetness. It’s the perfect trifecta for beef but works well with other dishes too and it’s easily customizable, making it a great base marinade to work with again and again!
